5 Things to Do When You Don't Feel Like Writing
You know you should be writing instead of reading this blog post right? Okay good, the first step is admitting you have a problem.
Your problem is that you don’t feel like writing.
You know you should be writing, honestly, you really want to write, you have that great idea and those characters are jumping around in your head. The problem is you have this blah feeling every time you sit down at your computer and open that file. You stare at the screen, willing it to tell you what to type, but alas, it remains silent.
So what should you do? Try something “writing-adjacent.”

Writing Adjacent - These are things that are not writing, but that may inspire you to write. Seeking inspiration may feel like a waste of time, but it’s better than logging onto Facebook or Instagram again with your novel open on the computer in front of you.

It’s all about finding what works for you. These are a few things that have worked for me, that inspire me to write or get me excited about writing again.

1. Listen to Podcasts

I have a new-found love for podcasts, and there is a podcast out there for everything. Yep, including writing. Below are some of my favorites right now (but please suggest more)!

2. Read a Good Book

There is nothing like reading an amazing book to inspire you, to remind you exactly what you are trying to achieve

3. Watch YouTube Videos

There is a wealth of knowledge on YouTube from authors and aspiring authors. Affectionately known as Authortube, below are some of my favorites.

4. Grab a Notebook and Pen

Seriously, just try it. Sit down, with no distractions, with good old fashioned pen and paper and take just 10 minutes to write your thoughts, feelings or struggles. Remember, you love writing.

5. Read What You've Written

Sometimes you just need to remember that you really love what you’re creating. Maybe the words aren’t perfect yet, but reading what I’ve already written, even for just a little bit, always gets me excited to keep going (but NO editing here, that’s not what this is for).

So the next time you know you’re not in the mood to write, don’t go scrolling. Be intentional with your time, look for things that inspire you. Try some of these wiring adjacent things, just don’t get sucked into a black hole. Remember, these things aren’t actually writing…
